Community Service

Delaware is a caring community. Numerous volunteer and non-profit agencies offer support services, from disability assistance and home delivered meals to medical assistance, housing support and emergency mental health counseling.

Human Services: Meeting the Needs of the People

United Way of Delaware County provides partial funding to fourteen agencies in our county. Agencies providing youth services include: Boy Scouts of America, Liberty Community Center, Seal of Ohio Girl Scouts, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Touchstone. Emergency services are provided by American Red Cross, People in Need, Help Anonymous and Turning Point. The local chapter of the Red Cross provides swimming lessons, trains lifeguards and water safety instructors and coordinates successful blood drives. People In Need (PIN) supplies food and other emergency services. PIN directs the "Christmas Clearing House", which brings together many groups and individuals in the community to work together to provide the holiday spirit for those less fortunate.

United Way Agencies which provide counseling are: Delaware Area Recovery Resources, Help Anonymous, The Legal Aid Society and Turning Point.

Services are also available to community residents from Delaware Speech and Hearing Center. Senior Services for Independent Living provides care to senior citizens in their homes; The Association For Retarded Citizens offers support to persons who are developmentally disabled.

Caring and Sharing: Community Groups, Volunteer Action

For many residents of Delaware County, volunteerism is an important part of civic life. Church groups contribute to this spirit of giving and doing. Ohio Wesleyan University students continue a long tradition of service to the community. Opportunities abound and newcomers are welcome. There is always more to be done.

In addition to service agencies, there are many national service organizations in Delaware such as Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Optimists, American Association of University Women, Business and Professional Women and League of Women Voters, to name a few. Veterans organizations include the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AmVets and their auxiliaries. A number of historical groups are also active.
