Many Delaware churches trace their origins to the town's earliest years. First Presbyterian Church, at West Winter and Washington Streets, organized in 1810 and St. Peter's Episcopal, located several doors east on West Winter, are the city's oldest church buildings, dating from the middle-1800s. just a block away, is William Street United Methodist Church, which was organized in 1818. Delaware's varied congregations share a commitment to community welfare and social action. An active county ministerial association and church organizations carry out community service programs that extend across denominational lines. In fact, many of the more creative service programs in the county came about because of church involvement and sponsorship. Meals on Wheels, People in Need, Alcoholics Anonymous, Liberty Community Center, Help Anonymous, Hospice, Habitat for Humanity and the annual CROP walk are some of the programs organized or supported by local churches. All of Delaware's churches have youth organizations. In addition, Delaware's United Methodist, Episcopal and Presbyterian churches jointly sponsor an Ecumenical Youth Group for junior high and high school students of all denominations. The Ecumenical Youth Group organizes an annual summer work camp in needy communities.
