Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra (COSO)

Not many small cities can boast that they have their own symphony orchestra. However, Delaware, Ohio is an exceptional place. The Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra (COSO) performs a number of concerts each year. The orchestra's sixty-five members are all from central Ohio, and their dedication and wealth of talent enrich us all with the wonderful spectrum of orchestral music. COSO's musicians represent many walks of life: university music faculty, doctors, business people, homemakers, students and retirees.

The Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra performs in historic Gray Chapel on the Ohio Wesleyan University campus in Delaware, Ohio. One of Ohio’s most acclaimed concert halls, this unique auditorium was built in the 1890's and offers a perfect setting for the orchestra’s subscription series. The room is beautifully appointed and crowned by the magnificent Klais Organ built in Germany. The seating design gives an intimate and personal feeling to each concert. Whether seated in the balcony or on the main floor, you will magically become a part of the performance.

COSO's Holiday Concert is a Delaware tradition. (Once, when a new conductor suggested removing one or two of the crowd favorites, he was met with vehement disapproval. So, the pieces stayed.) A blend of strings and choral music, it is sure to have something to please everyone. Tickets are available for both matinee and evening performances.

Another concert that has become a Delaware tradition is the annual Fourth of July Concert which precedes Delaware City's fireworks display. Seating for this concert is free if you bring a blanket or your own lawn chair, although reserved seating is also available at the front of the performance. (This seating tends to be popular with Delaware's senior citizens.) One highlight of the Fourth of July Concert is the performance of the "Armed Forces Salute", a medley of theme songs from the Armed Forces. Current and former service members are asked to stand when their theme song is played, and always command a well-deserved round of applause! In addition to the crowd-pleasing favorites of John Philip Sousa pieces, the concert always features a rousing ending with the "1812 Overture", complete with bells and "cannons" (fireworks).
